  1.                   TABLE OF CONTENTS/INDEX GENERATOR

  3.     To mark a piece of text to be included in the index  or  table  of
  4. contents,  use  the <EFFECTS> command (the ALT E key). Go to the start
  5. of the text to be marked, press <EFFECTS>, pick 'i' for index and  't'
  6. for  table  of contents, and type 'y' to turn the marker on. Then move
  7. to the end of the text, and repeat the same procedure, typing  'n'  to
  8. turn the marker off.

  10.     To mark off sub-entries for the table of contents, insert  two  or
  11. more  toc  markers  before  the text. For every additional marker, the
  12. entry will be indented two additional spaces in the table of contents.
  13.     For the index generator, all you need to do is mark off  an  entry
  14. once.  The  index  generator  will  search the entire text for all oc-
  15. curences of that entry.

  17.     The  <SPECIAL  FUNCTIONS>  command  (the  ALT S key) allows you to
  18. invoke the <INDEX> and <TOC> functions.

  20.     When  you  press  the  <TOC> command, you will be first asked what
  21. leader character you want. This is the character that appears  between
  22. the  text  on the left-hand side and the page number on the right-hand
  23. side. The default character is a period. You are  then  asked  whether
  24. you want the table of contents to be inserted before the first line in
  25. your  file, or saved to a separate file. If you choose the latter, you
  26. will be prompted for the name of the file.

  28.     When you press the <INDEX> command, you are asked whether you want
  29. the index put after the last line of the file, or  written  out  to  a
  30. separate file. If an item occurs on consecutive pages, say 2, 3, 4 and
  31. 5, then the pages will be express as a range (ie "2-5").
